Monitoring anti-Muslim hate in addition to developments in the Middle East and wider Islamic World

Cutting edge scholarship at Jihad Watch

Robert Spencer included the following on his blog:

Algeria closes 900 mosques and Muslim prayer halls because jihad terrorists used them for meetings

Here Spencer demonstrates his intellectual shallowness and I think it’s worth examining a little.

Robert Spencer has no knowledge of Algeria or its politics.  If he did, he would know that the Algerian government is a dictatorship that runs a torture state.  Levels of corruption in Algeria are so high that this wealthy country languishes in nearly society-wide poverty while the elite enriches itself.

If these mosques were indeed closed, it stands to reason that they were being used not by ‘Jihad terrorists’ (Spencer forgets to use the word ‘alleged’) but by agitators for reform and democracy.

The article that Spencer links to provides no evidence whatsoever as to the activities of what Spencer terms ‘jihad terrorists’.  As a matter of fact, the article itself does not use this term.  It says

The Algerian government last week closed around 900 mosques and prayer halls throughout the country because it says they were used for meetings by suspected Islamic terrorists, Algerian newspaper El-Khabar reported on Monday.

One would wonder why an American like Robert Spencer would place so much trust in the words of a dictatorship that is in no meaningful sense better than that of the late Col. Gaddafi.

I raised these points in an email I wrote to Mr Spencer – champion of freedom of speech and debate – and enquired on what basis he places such high value on the claims of the Algerian torture state.

I’m not holding my breath for a response since Spencer is a coward who will not answer for the claims he makes on his blog.

Below is the email I sent.  Readers may like to paste it into an email of their own and send it to him using the following address:

Perhaps he will answer if enough people ask the right questions?

Dear Mr Spencer

On your blog today you include an article from a news website under the title “Algeria closes 900 mosques and Muslim prayer halls because jihad terrorists used them for meetings”.  You then go on to speculate as to why, if the Algerian government can do such a thing, the American government does not pursue similar policies.

Did it not occur to you that Algeria is a blood-soaked dictatorship that runs a torture state?  Did it not occur to you that the Algerian government could be lying?  What if, for example, people in these mosques and prayer halls were discussing the massive and staggering levels of corruption in the Algerian government that plunge the people into poverty and spiraling unemployment?

If you had any knowledge of the basics of Algerian politics and opposition movements, you would know that corruption and oppression are at the top of the agenda for anti-government movements in Algeria.

On what basis do you so uncritically believe the announcements of a corrupt dictator like Bouteflika?

Does this represent the ‘cutting edge scholarship’ which you claim characterises your blog?

Kind regards

The lies of the Israeli right

The Jerusalem Post is a bastion of the Israeli right.

Today, it includes an article by one Benjamin Weinthal entitled “Top Dutch MP slams Turkey’s ‘belligerence’ against Israel“.

We are regaled with the wonderful story of a ‘Middle East expert’ and ‘top’ politician Wim Kotenoeven who has stood up for Israel against the wicked lies of all Muslims everywhere.  With no hint of embarrassment, Weinthal proclaims that

Middle East expert Kortenoeven accuses Turkey of “sliding into an abyss of Islamic extremism,”

Middle East expert?  As we know already, for the Euro-American Transatlantic Right – of which Israel is a firm part – it takes nothing to be a Middle East expert.  All one needs is to hate Arabs and all other Muslims everywhere, read a poorly researched book or two (if you’re Robert Spencer) or no books at all (if you’re Pamela Geller) and boom!  You’re a Middle East expert, with books coming out of your… ears, and articles lauding your efforts in the gutter post of the Israeli right.

But who is Wim Kortenoeven?  He is a member of Geert Wilders’ ‘Freedom Party’.  That’s right.  Geert Wilders, who wants to ban the Koran (in the name of freedom).  The same Geert Wilders who is a known supporter of Robert Spencer (scholar of nothing and frequent contributor to the US’s Fox News and Canada’s Sun TV among others where he spews his unearned expertise) and Pamela Geller, the prolific liar and writer of the bizarre Atlas Shrugs blog.

But of course, Mr Weinthal fails to mention Geert Wilders even once, despite the fact that Wilders is the founder and head of the Freedom Party.

Wienthal crows

According to a transcript and audio tape of Kortenoeven’s remarks, he stated: “Turkey, a member state of NATO, is also increasingly belligerent towards the Jewish State of Israel. Threats and baseless accusations are issued against Israel ever more frequently. And provocations are rampant. Israeli freighters are harassed by Turkish warships.”

Turkey is increasingly belligerent towards of the Jewish State of Israel?  Kortenoeven and his cheerleader Weinthal may like to elaborate on that.  I wonder, for example:  when was the last time that the Turkish military boarded an Israeli vessel in international waters and slaughtered nine Israeli civilians?  That’s right!  It was the ISRAELI military that boarded a TURKISH vessel in international waters and murdered NINE TURKISH CIVILIANS.  If Turkey limits its response to a little harassment of Israeli freighters, I would suggest that this is indicative of how civilised that bastion of the Islamic world is.

It is presumably Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s failure to prostrate himself to the Jewish State in the manner of Kortenoeven that has rendered him ‘belligerent’ towards poor Israel.  Never mind Israel’s point blank refusal to apologise for the massacre or to pay compensation.  Clearly any Muslim who objects to the slaughter of innocent people in the name of God’s Chosen People (or should that be race?) is an Islamist terrorist and threat to the free world.

Of Nicolai Sennels and seeming stupid

Robert Spencer – he of no qualifications in Islamic studies and no academic publications to his name -informed us some time ago that he had included, among others, an extreme right-wing self-proclaimed psychologist named Nicolai Sennels as part of the Jihad Watch team.

Spencer stated, without irony or shame, that this was part of the ‘cutting-edge scholarship’ of his blog.

Sennels is unable, it appears, to write anything true.  This is why, presumably, his services have been retained by Spencer at Jihad Watch.  It appears that all one needs to do to contribute to the blog is

  • Hate Muslims
  • Know nothing about Muslims or Islam
  • Claim to be something that you are not – a scholar, a historian, a psychologist, anything really.

I wrote here about an example of Sennels’ cutting-edge scholarship.  Briefly, there has been a spate of arson attacks in Berlin.  There is no evidence and, indeed, no suggestion by the Berlin authorities, that these attacks have been carried out by Turks or any other sort of largely-brown Muslim.  Sennels, though, suggested that they are are.

I wrote the following email to Sennels, enquiring about his odd attitude to facts.

Dear Mr Sennels

Some time ago, at Jihad Watch, you posted this.  In it, you claim that those guilty for this spate vandalism are Turks (Muslims).

On what basis did you make this claim?  Are you able to provide any proof?  Are you privy to any information in this matter to which theBerlinpolice are not?  If not, why did you claim that Muslims are guilty of these attacks?

You have also posted a video on Jihad Watch of a young man behaving in a rude, abusive and intimidating manner on a train inDenmark.  What indications are there in the video that suggest that the man is a Muslim?  Did you, at the time of posting, have any information that indicated that the man was a Muslim?  If not, why did you make the claim?

I wrote about your post regarding the car vandalism in Berlin here.  If you feel that I have been in any way unfair, please let me know.

True to the cutting-edge scholarship that characterises Jihad Watch, its fearless leader Bob Spencer and his underlings, I received the following from Nicolai Sennels, Man of Letters:

Hi Omar

The words “Turk” and “Muslim” are not in that article. You seem stupid.

Nicolai

My point exactly.  The words ‘Turk’ and ‘Muslim’ appear nowhere in article that he provides as evidence that Turks (which is to say Muslims) are responsible for the attacks.

I would suggest, therefore, that it is not I who seems stupid.

I wrote the following in response to Mr Sennels, but I am yet to hear back.  Like Spencer and Geller before him, there is no effort to answer for his bold claims.

Mr Sennels

Perhaps my email was not clear:

http://www.jihadwatch.org/2011/08/multiculturism-in-berlin-germans-want-private-police-and-weapons-to-protect-themselves-and-property.html

In the post – which you can find via this link – you say that:

Berlin is the third largest Turkish city after Istanbul and Ankara, and a prime example of failed multiculturism. Citizens are starting to discuss vigilantism and whether or not they should establish armed patrols. Christians “have long called for a special auxiliary police made up of volunteers who would have uniforms, batons and handcuffs.”

But the article you provide does not mention Turks or Muslims.  That is true.  But you are obviously trying to make the link, are you not?

Many thanks

Omar M Shtewi

UPDATE:

In response to the above email, I received the following from Nicolai Sennels.  I would suggest that it goes some way to explain why he is a highly appropriate candidate to contribute to Jihad Watch.

It looks like you are that missing link.
Nicolai

Robert Spencer: Expert.

Anyone familiar with Robert Spencer will know that there is nothing he will not claim to be an expert on.  This is, I suppose, a symptom of the general decline of the United States.  Opinion in America is frequently presented as fact and polemic as scholarship.

And so, Robert Spencer – non-expert on all things – provides his analysis of the recent collapse of Turkish-Israeli relations.  See examples here and here.

You will recall that the Israeli army slaughtered nine Turkish civilians attempting to deliver aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.  The Israeli government could not accept that killing civilians – even those of their allies – is wrong and therefore refused to apologise for the massacre.  The result has been an unsurprising collapse in relations between the two countries.

However, since Turkey is an Islamic country, Robert Spencer explains the issues between the two states in the most infantile way possible.  He states, for example, that Turkish Prime Minister Ergodan “wants jihad”.

Translation: you must accept that the State of Israel can do as it pleases, murdering your civilians and behaving as if it owns the entire Middle East.  If you refuse to do this, you are jihadist.

Even more bizarre, Ergodan’s denunciations of Israel are in fact, attempts to

Push for jihad against Israel as he works to destroy Kemalist secularism and reestablish Sharia at home.

It is important to remember that Spencer takes himself seriously.  More frightening is that he is a regular guest on Fox News – the most watched news channel in the USA.

You’ll find an interesting piece on the Transatlantic Right here on Aljazeera English’s ‘The Listening Post’.  Take a few moments to watch.

The Response of the American Right to their part in the Ideological Grooming of Anders Breivik

How has the US anti-Muslim contingent of bloggers and hate-mongers responded to their part in the ideological grooming of Anders Breivik?  If you imagined even for a moment that they may have toned down their hate rhetoric out of respect for the Norwegian victims’ families who are yet to bury their dead, you would be wrong.

While it has been scarcely two weeks since Breivik embarked on his blood-soaked rampage to rescue Norway from ‘Islamization’ and ‘Dhimmitude’, Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller and others appear to have resisted any temptation whatsoever to engage in any sort of reflection as to their part in the development of Breivik’s siege mentality.  If anything, the murders appear to have given these people a perverse boost.

Geller:   Do not be distracted by the insignificant Breivik – Islamization Continues

In between providing lame and sordid excuses for her rhetoric and vitriol, Pamela Geller had indeed updated her blog with 14 new posts a mere four days after the massacre.  These posts dealt with the ongoing Islamization of the Western world and beyond – precisely the delusion that led Breivik to carry out his terrifying massacre.

Among this new ammunition for the Breivik-minded among us are: a glorious victory against the “Islamization” of Australia (yes, the Muslim contagion has spread Down Under); an alleged hanging of 8-year old child in Afghanistan by the Taliban (though quite where Islam mandates infanticide is not obvious to me or any other sober individual); protests in Jordan which are part of the ongoing and righteous Arab Spring but which Geller has renamed “the Islamic Spring”, suggesting that democratisation efforts by the Arab peoples are yet another facet of the gargantuan conspiracy of Muslims to take over the world and – who knows? – the Universe itself; the building of a mosque in Greece which is no doubt another forward base of the Muslim onslaught; the arrest of Pakistanis (read Muslims) in Washington DC engaging in alleged illegal advocacy on behalf of Islamabad; a report on the latest ramblings of an obscure Islamic scholar in Malaysia and a new phenomenon that Geller has identified and dubbed “Vehicular Jihad”, the premise of which is that Muslims only crash their cars as an act of war against Western civilisation.

But this should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Geller’s defence of her hate-speech.  Anyone who harbours any concern that Breivik may well not be the last to commit such an act should be highly concerned about her response.

Echoing Robert Spencer (since these days it is not clear where she ends and he begins), she claims, in an interview with the Daily Caller website, that blaming her, Spencer and the other anti-Muslim ideologues for the Breivik massacre is like blaming the Beatles for the Manson murders (because Charles Manson indentified their song Helter Skelter as an inspiration).

This reasoning (and I use the term lightly) could only apply if Helter Skelter where a song about the Black conquest ofAmerica (which Manson viewed as a reality) and that Manson took the idea to an extreme and decided to commit murder.

The difference – and Geller and Spencer know this and are actively deceiving their readers – is that their writing is explicitly about a wide-ranging and coordinated Muslim attack on the Western world, couched in the language of warfare: “colonisation”, “occupation”, “fifth column”, “invasion” and so on.  The comparison is at best facile and, at worst, a deliberate attempt to trivialise their role in the most serious attack onNorway since the Second World War.

For the sane and compassionate among us, it is clear that the victims of this tragedy are the innocent people who were slaughtered by Breivik.  Not for Pamela Geller.  For her, she is the victim, along with her ideological colleagues.  She is, indeed, the prey of “an agenda-driven media hellbent [sic] on destroying the freedom-loving voices on the right”, wielding the massacre as “a club to bludgeon the voices of freedom” because the media is “shariah-compliant”.

And there we have it.  The media is shariah-compliant.  The media is an instrument of Islamic law, imposed on the West by an invading enemy.  It should chill anyone to the bone that in denying her ideological role in the development of the Breivik mentality, she reinforces the very beliefs that he discusses in detail in his manifesto.

She goes on to accentuate her status as victim by suggesting that anti-Semitism is at play.  The shariah-compliant fifth-column media propaganda wing of the Islamic conquerors is engaged in a “blood-libel” against Geller, who is indeed Jewish.  She clearly has no qualms about exhuming the corpses of those Jews who have been murdered as a result of historical (that is, real) blood-libels, if it helps her case.

Who is to blame for Breivik’s actions (apart from Breivik himself), if not the latter-day Ghandi that is Pam Geller?  Muslims, of course.  She states that “if anyone incited him to violence, it was the Islamic supremacists [Muslims]”.  Pamela Geller is a woman who clearly does not know when to stop.

Robert Spencer:  It’s a Leftist/Islamic Conspiracy

The response of Robert Spencer – the brains of the outfit, so to speak – took longer in coming.   While he himself was largely absent in the aftermath of the massacre from the Jihad Watch blog that he runs, other contributors kept up the work of anti-Muslim hysteria.

If Pamela Geller’s decision to proceed with reports on the ongoing “Islamization” of the West when the people of Norway were hardly beginning to come to terms with a massacre committed on that premise, then the activities of the Jihad Watch blog can only be described as astonishing.

A mere four days into the aftermath of the Breivik massacre Jihad Watch contributors had posted no less than thirty-six entries dealing with the “Islamization” that Anders Breivik saw fit to kill to stop.  Among topics too numerous to mention are: the Greek mosque mentioned by Geller (see above); alleged “jihad” in China also mentioned by Geller (see above); the ravings of the obscure Islamic scholar in Malaysia presented as earth-shattering news also mentioned by Geller (see above); the alleged beating of a young Sikh man by a Muslim youth here in the United Kingdom (because all violence committed by Muslims has its foundation in Islam and this young man was, presumably, acting on direct instructions from Mecca); a humorous story of the murder of a Muslim doctor in Pakistan by another Muslim and various other tales of the murderous and coordinated Islamic onslaught.  This is the context of Spencer’s response to suggestion that he played some role in forming the ideas that led Breivik to take murderous action to “change Norwegian society”.

I had hoped that Spencer’s period of relative quiet was due to some measure of soul-searching and reflection as to how to handle his Crusade against every Muslim on earth in light of the Breivik massacre.

No such decency.  What finally arrived instead – on the website of the hardly august right-wing blog Human Events – was a bizarre seven-paragraph affirmation of precisely the views that Breivik espoused, which simultaneously denied even the possibility that he – who is quoted many, many times in the Breivik manifesto – could possibly have contributed to the anti-Muslim hysteria that drove Breivik to attack his treacherous (or should that be shariah-compliant?) government.

In his article, he writes a mere two words before the key phrase arrives: “jihad terror and Islamic supremacism”.  He states, in a tasteless display that is frankly horrifying even by his standards, “Don’t resist jihad terror and Islamic supremacism – just surrender, for the sake of the children”.  I won’t dwell here on how insensitive such a statement is when the children in question (who appear to have insulted and affronted Spencer by being murdered) are yet to be buried.   Suffice to say that this is the best indication that one can hope for that Spencer’s hatred of Muslims (and anyone who does not hate them also) is so single-minded and obsessive that the Breivik massacre will not stand in his way.

Spencer is not Jewish, which means that he cannot claim, like Pamela Geller, that anti-Semitism is at play here.  He can stoop lower though.  Yes, for it is anti-white racism that has characterised media reports of this massacre.  Anders Breivik is a mere “pawn” of “the Left and its Islamic supremacist [read Muslim] allies” who are using him on account of his blond hair and Nordic looks.

He goes on to the Breivik-minded assertion that the intent of media coverage is not to get to the bottom of why the killer did what he did (as if discussion of his motivations should be out-of-bounds), but rather to smear “The scholars, politicians and activists who have spoken out about the threat to human rights and constitutional principles that jihad and Islamization pose”.  By “scholars” he is presumably referring to himself (who has published nothing in peer-reviewed academic journals and has contributed no original research to any field in which he pretends to have expertise), Bat Ye’or (who is also totally absent from academia) and the other members of the anti-Muslim hate movement.  They are, in fact, the victims of the Breivik massacre.

He completes this hate-filled article by warning that the Islamic supremacists [Muslims] will eventually turn on their Leftist enablers and complete their conquest of the West, overturning all forms of freedom.  When Breivik’s term of solitary confinement is complete, he will no doubt agree.

The Bloody Rise of the Transatlantic Right

What drives a young and heretofore regular Norwegian man to carry out a savage attack on the moderate political order of his country?  What drove one Anders Behring Breivik to murder 80 Norwegian children and to attack the centre of his country’s political life?

Clearly, the blame for this horrifying attack must lie with him.  His decisions are his own.  But we must consider that he was provided with the necessary ideological fuel to legitimise his bigotry and drive him to take drastic measures to alter a system which he may well have believed operated against the interests of the Norwegian people.

We must consider that the growth and transatlantic nature of the new far-right anti-Muslim movement figured largely in this man’s decision to attack his own country.

The key figures in this movement have risen to prominence in theUnited Statesin recent years but their influence among certain right-wing journalists, public intellectuals and organisations on our side of theAtlantichas been growing.

We must fully understand the ways in which they exploit European concerns and fears over immigration to promote their anti-Muslim agenda.  We must understand that these ideologues, bloggers and self-aggrandising so-called scholars do not have the best interests of the “West” at heart.  They hate for hate’s sake.  They channel energies that, in times past, would have been directed against the Black man, or the Jew, against a new target – the Muslim.  And they legitimise their activities with the thin claim they oppose Islamism and not Muslims themselves.

I am referring here primarily to Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer (though are many others who also require urgent attention).  From their bases in the United States, they influence and in some cases direct prominent right-wingers in continental Europe and here in the United Kingdom.  Their fingerprints can be found on the statements and beliefs of figures including Geert Wilders of the Netherlands, organisations such as the English Defence League and, tragically, the mass-murderer of upwards of sixty teenagers – Anders Behring Breivik.

Atlas Shrugs – Rape and Rabid Racism

We now know from media reports that Breivik was a reader of Geller’s popular Atlas Shrugs blog.  Specifically, he recommended a post by her in which she referred to a non-existent “media blackout” inFrance with reference to riots by ethnic minorities there.  Instead of attributing the social problems of ethnic minorities in France to the same factors that one would find at play among Black or Hispanic (non-Muslim) minorities in the US – indeed, on full display in her home city of New York – she refers to “Muslims rampaging…, destroying and setting alight the streets of France”.  She goes on to sketch out a grand conspiracy of government and media intent on aiding and abetting the so-called Islamisation of Europe describing “submission” by the media “fifth column” to the invading hordes.

Geller will no doubt protest her innocence of any charge of race-bating but her behaviour speaks volumes.

In the agonising hours when the Breivik massacre was still ongoing and the facts were yet to be established, Geller predictably began covering what information was available.  She included in one post – Friday, July 22, at 1437 – a host of links to her previous posts that dealt with Norway.  One of these links referred to the horrific charge that every single rape committed in Oslo is committed by a Muslim (which, if true, would render the Norwegian capital entirely rape-free, but for the Muslim invaders).  She has since removed that link.  Could it be that such wild accusations drive men like Breivik to believe that their country is being systematically destroyed by some Islamic-Leftist conspiracy to pillage the country?  She also removed a link to a “Letter from Norway” but kept all the links (here, here and here) that deal with a “genocide” against Jews in Norway.

This grand conspiracy is what Geller and those of her ilk routinely refer to as “Eurabia” (a child-like linguistic construction denoting the supposed Muslim takeover of Europein collusion with (invariably leftist) political elites – a term used by the extremist England-based pseudo-historian Bat Ye’or in her book Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis).

On her blog, under the category “Eurabia: Dhimmitude”, there are no less than 481 entries describing the ongoing destruction of Europe at the hands of an evil Islamic/Leftist conspiracy.  This includes “Germany Going Islam”, with the “grotesque” Muslim conquest being already a “fait accompli”.

How can a naïve and impressionable young man from a small nation like Norway(with a population far less than that of London) fail to be concerned when reading the shocking revelations on display on the Atlas Shrugs blog?  How can he fail to fear for the cultural future of his country when the Muslim hordes are secretly planning – like the malicious Jew of Nazi myth rubbing his hands in glee as his evil plans take shape – to conquer Europethrough stealth?  Geller describes the possibility (and a possibility is all it is) of Turkish entry into the European Union thus:

Turkeywould be the first Muslim majority country granted admittance into the EU. This would, in one stealth action, result in the radical islamization of the EU. Larger states have more votes than smaller ones in the EU andTurkey would be the largest, most populated country in the organization. [My emphasis]

What is a man to do when his entire civilisation is said to be under relentless Muslim attack, with the collusion of his own “fifth column” government and media?  Indeed, it is likely that Anders Breivik saw genocide in his future.

Geller is a proponent of the outrageous libel that Muslims are responsible for 270 million deaths (here and here) – surely an apocalypse by any standard – in addition to mass “cultural annihilation” that continues unabated to this day in various countries.  Was Breivik driven by the belief that his nation will join the ranks of the fictitious 270 million souls lost to the Islamic savages?  It certainly seems that way since he states in his manifesto that “Islam (ism) has historically led to 300 million deaths” (rounding up Geller’s figure to the nearest 100 million for better effect).  Did he believe that drastic action was needed to overturn the regime of the “fifth column” of government and media that facilitates and enables the grand conquest ofEurope?  It would be difficult for any impressionable person to come away from Geller’s horrifying blog without feeling thatEurope is on the brink of a cataclysm that would make the Nazi Holocaust look like spilt milk.

What did Breivik himself recommend, according to the London-based Guardian newspaper?  “Join organisations like Stop the Islamisation of Europe” is one tactic that he suggests.  This is, of course, the European counterpart of Geller and Spencer’s Stop the Islamisation of America which Geller bizarrely likes to describe as a “prominent human rights organisation” in faked news (here, here, here, here, here and here among others) reports that are written by her (or her allies) and presented as legitimate news coverage via Yahoo! News, PR Newswire and other outlets.

He also recommends reading a book written by the popular anti-Muslim blogger who calls himself “Fjordman” entitled Defeating Eurabia (that word again) which he recommends as “the perfect Christmas gift for family and friends”.  He poses the chilling question:

How many thousands of new Europeans must die, how many one hundred thousand [sic] European women should be raped, millions robbed and tractor discarded [sic] before you understand that multiculturalism + Islam does not work?

Breivik also hopes for the establishment of a Norwegian equivalent to the extreme right-wing English Defence League, which is regularly praised by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer.  Geller has referred to the EDL as “the standard bearers of freedom in the UK”.  Spencer’s ringing endorsement of the EDL stated that the decision to form a Jewish Division of the fascist group was “a development much to be applauded” and had praised them for their efforts to “confront official British dhimmitude” (see below for a discussion this term).  According to Spencer, the EDL “deserves the support of all free people” in its crusade to defend England against “the global jihad and Islamization of Britain”.   The Guardian has suggested that Breivik was in contact with the EDL.  The EDL, for its part, “vehemently” denies this or any association with Breivik.

Robert Spencer – Pseudo-Scholar and Shaper of the Debate

While Pamela Geller provides what one could cautiously describe as the charisma and charm necessary to promulgate these hateful views, she does not generally pose as a scholar or learned person in matters relating to the Islamic religion and the history of the Islamic world.  She does claim, though, to have “immersed” herself in the study of geopolitics in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack.  The child-like logic that characterises her blog does not bear out this claim, however.

The anti-Muslim hate movement requires two things: public figures willing to promulgate their views and their anti-Muslim agenda and a team of “scholars” in the background providing an academic edge to this bigotry.

Prominent anti-Muslim bigots like Pamela Geller (a frequent contributor on Fox News), Glenn Beck (who needs no introduction), Douglas Murray in the United Kingdom (a frequent contributor the BBC and avowed Neoconservative who has stated that “Conditions for Muslims in Europe must be made harder across the board”), Melanie Phillips who writes for the London-based Daily Mail newspaper, The Spectator Magazine, Standpoint, The Jewish Chronicle and The Australian (and has described Arabs as “savages” and referred to “the Arab poison”) among others require a scholarly source of information so as to present their neo-fascist hate as fact.

This is where a contingent of individuals, posing as academics, comes in.  Daniel Pipes has long been the favoured go-to pseudo academic of choice (he has never held a tenured position in a university and publishes nothing in reputable peer-reviewed journals of international relations or Middle Eastern/Islamic studies).  He has in recent times been eclipsed by the prolific charlatan and dilettante Robert Spencer.   Around Spencer, and providing important historical “sources” are Andrew Bostom (a medical professional by training who has no formal education in Islamic studies – his “work” has been used as a source of information by both Spencer and Melanie Phillips); Ibn Warraq, who claims to be an “apostate” from Islam, also lauded by Geller as “the world’s leading scholar on [sic] Islam”(he also has held no position in academia and has contributed no original research whatsoever to the field of Islamic studies); Bat Ye’or, an England-based extremist “historian” and the most prominent promulgator of the “Eurabia” fallacy (Geller relies on her writings to legitimise her claims of grand “genocide” by Muslims and features her frequently on her Atlas Shrugs blog – her work is also admired by Melanie Phillips);  Bruce Bawer, the (ominously) Norway-based American author of such hateful work as While Europe Slept: How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within and, Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom.

It is Robert Spencer though, who sits at the head of this contingent of hatemongers, using as his primary vehicle his widely read and wildly popular blog JihadWatch.  This blog, which according to Spencer is a provider of “cutting-edge” scholarship, is described in grandiose terms as a “program of the David Horowitz Freedom Centre” and provides running coverage of terrorism all over the world.  It also runs an ongoing smear campaign against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and reputable scholars such as Reza Aslan (here, here, here, here, here and here), Tariq Ramadan (here, here, here, here and here) and John Esposito (here, here, here, here and here for Geller’s contribution).

The blog also covers the ongoing and wide-ranging “stealth Jihad” by the Muslim Brotherhood aimed, Spencer and the other contributors to his blog claim, at conquering the United States and overturning the Constitution.  All activities of Muslims are framed as part of a massive orchestrated conspiracy to infiltrate the West with a view to its eventual destruction.

Spencer is also a prolific writer who has written and “edited” many books which pose as academic analyses of Islam and Islamic history.  It is worth noting here that Spencer knows no Arabic and on that basis is wholly unable to use primary source material in his efforts to provide his hateful rhetoric with the appearance of scholarship.  He has no formal training in Islamic studies.  His published works include such titles as The Truth about Muhammad: Founder of the World’s Most Intolerant Religion, The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran (which features a cartoon picture of a bomb on the cover), The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades (which, in an indication of its seriousness, features a cartoon pig’s head on the front cover) and, most tellingly and perhaps most relevant to the Breivik massacre: Stealth Jihad: How Radical Islam is Subverting America without Guns or Bombs.  He has also “edited” (note the academic pretence), The Myth of Islamic Tolerance which features a “forward” by Ibn Warraq (see above).  This book amounts to nothing more than a paper blog, consisting of printed posts by the aforementioned collective of pseudo-intellectual bigots: 15 posts by Spencer himself, 18 posts by Bat Ye’or and others by Daniel Pipes, Ibn Warraq and other prominent figures in the fraud that misleads thousands of people.

It is Robert Spencer who provides the vocabulary that so grossly defines Muslims as a collective and monolithic enemy of the West.  His regular use of the word ‘”stealth” is frequently echoed by Daniel Pipes and others.  He frequently describes Muslims as “Islamic supremacists”.  This is a particularly heinous attempt to hijack the legitimate repugnance invoked by this word when used in reference to white supremacists around the world.  The “Islamic supremacist” angle is a particularly telling insight into the intellectual limitations that beset Spencer and all of his work.  How can a religion that accepts new believers and desires all of humanity to be spiritually saved possibly be described as “supremacist”, when membership is open to every single human being on the face of the earth?  One evidently cannot become Caucasian, which is what provides the term “supremacist” with all of its frightening power.

Here though, we must consider the word “Dhimmi” and the chilling fact that this term has indeed been used by Anders Breivik in his online contributions to debates surrounding immigration and multiculturalism in Europe.  Briefly, the word describes the status of Christians and Jews in historical Islamic empires, whose social status and limitations were clearly defined.  In return they were protected by the Islamic authorities from internal and external threats.  The historic result was that Christians and Jews experienced nothing like the persecution that prevailed in Europe at that time.

Spencer has perverted this term and uses it frequently to describe Western politicians and media personalities who display no hatred of Muslims.  Anders Breivik described many times the state of “Dhimmitude” in Norwegian life – established subservience to the supposed Islamic conquerors in Europe – a term which was coined by Bat Ye’or.

This method of formalising the so-called Islamisation of Europe with vocabulary that sounds like the terminology of the social sciences serves to cement in the heads of impressionable Europeans with legitimate concerns about both immigration and terrorism that all is lost.  That their governments are against them, in collusion with their Muslim neighbours and that tomorrow, Norway will cease to be Norway.

What can be done?

This movement has a set of ideological leaders – most prominent among them Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer.  But the strength of Geller and Spencer is that they hold no official role in any extremist right wing party.  They must, however, be outed as the key ideological protagonists in the new right wing movements which are gaining prominence and influence across he Western World.  The United States has become the base of a hate ideology that has now claimed the lives of children in Europe.

The information age and the growth of social networking and the internet means that what were once local issues have become global in scope.  These developments have demonstrated their power for good in the world – see the Arab Spring – but they can also have the opposite effect.  Instead of motivating people to grasp what is good and decent in life, these extremists are promoting hate and social tension which, as a European, I believe will ultimately become unsustainable.

Before the Oslo massacre, the hate of Geller, Spencer, Beck and the rest was palpable in Europe.  It was not, however, a key influence in a mass murderer.

This is no longer the case.  The transatlantic network of hate with its intellectual roots in the United States must be tackled head on.

Norway must be the wakeup call.
